How It Works

How to Use the Startup Runway Calculator

Five steps from raw numbers to a clear, shareable runway plan — no signup, no spreadsheet.

1

Enter your basics

Type in your current cash, monthly revenue, and monthly expenses — or tap a preset like "Early Traction" to start from realistic numbers.

2

Set your growth rates

Open "Advanced assumptions" to add your monthly revenue and expense growth, plus how many months ahead you want to project.

3

Read your gauge

Your runway, net burn, and break-even month update instantly — the color-coded gauge tells you at a glance if you're healthy or critical.

4

Test a scenario

Drag the sliders to see how cutting costs, growing revenue, or adding cash would each change your runway on their own.

Methodology

How It's Calculated

No black box — here's exactly what the calculator does with the numbers you enter.

1

Net Burn Rate

Net Burn = Monthly Expenses − Monthly Revenue

This is how much cash your startup loses each month once revenue is subtracted from spend. If revenue is higher than expenses, net burn is zero or negative — meaning you're cash-flow positive.

2

Growth-Adjusted Projection

Revₘ = Rev₀ × (1 + g_rev)^m
Expₘ = Exp₀ × (1 + g_exp)^m

Instead of assuming flat revenue and expenses, the calculator compounds your monthly growth rates forward — month by month — so a startup growing revenue 5%/mo looks very different by month 24 than one that's flat.

3

Cash Balance Over Time

Cashₘ = Cashₘ₋₁ − (Expₘ − Revₘ)

Each projected month, that month's net burn is subtracted from the running cash balance. This produces the cash curve shown in the chart, month by month, using your growth-adjusted figures — not the static ones you started with.

4

Runway (Months)

Runway = Current Cash ÷ Net Burn

At its simplest, runway is just cash divided by burn. Because burn changes every month as revenue and expenses grow, the calculator finds the exact month your cash balance crosses zero and interpolates to a precise decimal figure — for example, 14.6 months rather than a rounded 15.

5

Break-Even Month

Break-even = first m where Revₘ ≥ Expₘ

This is the first projected month where revenue growth catches up to expense growth — the point where net burn hits zero and your startup stops needing outside cash to stay afloat.

6

Additional Capital Needed

Gap = max(0, −min(Cashₘ) over target period)

To hit your desired runway, the calculator finds the lowest point your cash balance would reach before your target month and reports the shortfall — the extra capital that would keep you above zero the whole way through.

Assumptions & Limits

This calculator is a planning tool, not a financial forecast. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Constant growth rates — revenue and expense growth are applied as a fixed monthly percentage for the whole projection. Real growth is rarely this smooth.
  • No one-time events — it doesn't account for lump-sum costs (equipment, legal fees) or one-time inflows (grants, bridge notes) unless you fold them into your starting cash or monthly figures.
  • No taxes or seasonality — the model assumes even, month-over-month spend and revenue with no seasonal swings.
  • Local calculation only — all math runs in your browser; nothing you enter is stored or sent to a server.

FAQ

Startup Runway Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions founders ask before and after using our startup runway calculator.

A startup runway calculator is a tool that projects how many months your business can keep operating before its cash balance hits zero. Instead of a rough manual estimate, this calculator uses your current cash, monthly revenue, monthly expenses, and expected growth rates to model your cash balance month by month — giving you a precise runway figure rather than a guess.
You enter your current cash, monthly revenue, and monthly expenses, then optionally add your expected monthly revenue and expense growth rates. The calculator compounds those growth rates forward for your chosen projection window and finds the exact month your cash balance would reach zero. See the "How It's Calculated" section above for the full formulas.
Burn rate is how much cash you lose per month (expenses minus revenue). Runway is how many months your cash balance can absorb that burn before hitting zero — essentially cash divided by burn rate. This startup runway calculator shows both figures side by side, along with how they shift as your revenue and expenses grow.
Most early-stage investors consider 12–18 months a comfortable runway, since it gives you room to hit milestones before needing to fundraise again. Under 6 months is generally considered critical and calls for immediate action — cutting costs, raising capital, or both. The calculator's gauge color-codes your result against these general benchmarks.
Yes. Unlike a simple cash-divided-by-burn estimate, this calculator lets you set a monthly revenue growth rate and expense growth rate under "Advanced assumptions." It then projects both forward, month by month, so a growing startup and a flat one get very different runway numbers even with identical starting figures.
Yes, it's completely free, requires no signup, and all calculations run locally in your browser — none of your financial figures are sent to a server or stored anywhere. You can use it as many times as you like to test different scenarios.
Use the "How Much Do You Need?" section in the calculator — enter your desired runway in months, and it will calculate the minimum additional capital required to keep your cash balance above zero for that entire period, based on your current growth assumptions.
